The total cost of ownership (TCO) of a coating system over its service life breaks down into:

- Surface preparation (blasting, scaffolding, containment): 25-35 %

Quantified example: low-cost vs quality over 20 years
For a 500 m² storage tank (bottom + 2 m of shell): the low-cost system (3 coats generic epoxy, 200 µm DFT, 5-year life) costs about $35,000 per cycle. Over 20 years, 4 cycles = $140,000, not counting unavailability (4 × 2-week outages). The ISO 12944 C5-M quality system (zinc + epoxy + polyurethane, 335 µm DFT, 25-year life) costs about $85,000 for 20+ years with no rehab. That is a 65 % gap in favour of quality, excluding downtime gains.
The hidden cost of downtime
The often-underestimated line item is production downtime cost. For a refinery, cement plant or pulp-and-paper mill, unavailability costs $10,000 to $100,000 per day in lost revenue. A quality system that avoids 3 rehabs over 20 years saves 6 weeks of cumulative downtime — a financial gain that dwarfs the material premium.
Conclusion
Total cost of ownership is the only objective metric to compare coating systems. The golden rule: a well-specified and applied ISO 12944 quality system is always cheaper over its life than a low-cost system — without even counting HSE and environmental risks.
