Service life of epoxy coatings in immersion: the 7 factors

Why so much variation?

The same epoxy coating applied to two identical tanks can last 5 years on one and 25 years on the other. The difference does not come from the material — it comes from the 7 factors that determine coating degradation in service. Understanding them lets you act on the levers that extend service life.

Factor 1: Surface preparation

Surface preparation is a major factor in adhesion and durability. SSPC-SP10 / NACE No. 2 blast cleaning may be required for some immersion systems, but the preparation grade and anchor profile must match the project specification and product technical data sheet. A lower preparation grade is not equivalent unless the system has been qualified and explicitly accepted for that condition.

Factor 2: Thickness (DFT)

DFT (Dry Film Thickness) must match the technical data sheet and specification for the selected system. Insufficient film build can compromise the barrier, while excessive build can also create defects for some formulations. Measure and accept thickness under the applicable inspection plan.

Factors 3-7: chemistry, temperature, cycles, application, inspection

The next five factors are just as decisive but often overlooked:

  • 3. Fluid chemistry: pH, chlorides, solvents — each epoxy has specific resistance. Wrong choice = rapid failure.

  • 4. Service temperature: above the epoxy limit (often 90 °C), accelerated degradation. Specify a high-temp system if needed.

  • 5. Thermal cycles: repeated hot-cold variations fatigue the coating and create micro-cracks.

  • 6. Application conditions: humidity, temperature, dew point — respect the technical sheet limits.

  • 7. Periodic inspection: catching defects early (blistering, delamination) allows targeted repair before general failure.

Conclusion

An epoxy coating's service life is built at every step, from selection to inspection. It still depends on the product, fluid, application and operating conditions, so it should be estimated from documented evidence rather than a universal lifespan.
